Let A be a ring and qA be an ideal. q is called primary if one of the following conditions hold:

  1. In the ring A/q, every zero divisor is 1;;nilpotent
  2. For every x,yA such that xyq, then either xq, or yr(q)
Remark

Prime ideals are primary. Pre-images of primary ideals are primary.
